MULTIRACIAL MANDARIN: A talk by Dr. David Shuang Song In-Person
Trying to achieve multiple goals for multiple student populations can create thorny problems of practice, pushing language teachers and researchers to ask important questions about who and what language education is for. How do teachers and learners in large, diverse schools navigate these complicated issues? To explore these questions, join us for a guest lecture by Dr. David Shuang Song of the University of Oklahoma, author of Multiracial Mandarin: Asian Americans and Impossible Language. Whether you are a language teacher, learner, researcher, or simply curious about the intersections of language, race, and identity, this event is for you!
Mandarin language education is increasingly common in U.S. schools, not only for heritage learners but for learners of all identities and backgrounds. How does language education change and adapt as teachers serve increasingly diverse audiences and goals? Dr. David Shuang Song (Assistant Professor of Asian American Studies, University of Oklahoma) will share insights on this topic in a book talk at 7pm (refreshments will be served at 6:15).
