You're invited to observe Dr. Kate Carté, a 2024 Altshuler Distinguished Teacher Award Winner, for a session of her Doing Digital History course. Data visualizations and maps—a topic with their own history—are essential tools for communicating history. Using ArcGIS Online, for this course, students will do primary-source history research in an important topic, the history of Americans freeing enslavement, and being sought by former enslavers. They will then make data visualizations of their finding, building, and demonstrating competency in essential digital tools.

There are 30-50 students in this undergraduate-level class. In this session, students will be reporting on what they found researching slavery in 18th-19th c. newspapers
