Excessive workloads are a perpetual problem in public defense. Workload standards seek to address this issue by setting maximal limits. Workload standards can be derived from (1) a jurisdiction-specific workload study or (2) the adoption or modification of national standards to fit the jurisdiction. This workshop will address the recent effort to develop national workload standards. The session will also address potential uses and misuses of public defense workload standards. It will also consider how workload standards can improve public defense practice while simultaneously centering clients, families, and communities.
