This presentation will draw on political science research to comment on two significant trends in international affairs: the recent challenges to global democracy and the intensifying rivalry between the United States and China. Are democracies in peril? Will U.S.-China competition become an outright conflict? And what might be the relationship between democracy and great power competition today?

Featuring:

Jonathan Chu is a Presidential Young Professor in International Affairs at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. His research shows how political norms and psychology influence the domestic politics of democracy and international conflict and  appears in publications such as International Studies Quarterly, World Politics, Journal of Politics, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ​Jon received a B.A. in political science from UC San Diego and a Ph.D. also in political science from Stanford University, where he was a U.S. National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow.
