In the context of Mexico’s current government, it is essential to address the tasks and challenges of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Federal Judiciary within the constitutional system of checks and balances and the prospects for the rule of law in the country.

 

Featured lecturer:

José Ramón Cossío Díaz, Mexican Jurist & Former Justice of the Supreme Court of Mexico

José Ramón Cossío Díaz has a doctorate in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid. He has written 34 books and published various articles in collective books, academic notebooks academics, specialized magazines, popular magazines, and newspapers. He was head of Department of Law of the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) for 9 years, as well as a professor of Constitutional Law and Legal Theory at the same Institution. He is a  National Researcher Level III of the National System of Researchers, as well as member of different institutions such as: the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias, Barra Mexicana-Colegio de Abogados, Academia Nacional de Medicina de México, El Colegio Nacional, Sociedad Mexicana de Salud Pública, Consejo de Administración del Grupo Financiero Citibanamex  and Banco Nacional de México, also Instituto Mexicano de la Mediación, Academia Mexicana de la Historia, del Colegio de Bioética and the Comisión del Comité de Mediación of the International Chamber of Commerce in Mexico.

He has been granted awards and recognitions such as: Premio Nacional de Investigación (1998) in ​​Social Sciences; Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes (2009) in the field of History, Social Sciences and Philosophy; Premio Nacional de Jurisprudencia (2019); and 10 honorary doctorates awarded by various universities. Currently he is a retired minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, research professor associate of El Colegio de México, and director of Instituto para el Fortalecimiento del Estado de Derecho, A.C. (IFED) . In addition, he is a columnist for the newspaper El País and the newspaper El Universal, as well as a regular contributor to Aristegui Noticias
