The SMU Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center would like to invite you to a webinar titled:  “U.S. Legal Pathways for Mexican and Central American Immigrants,  by the Numbers.” Our research fellow will present new work that explores how legal pathways for migration may reduce unauthorized migration pressures, especially when coupled with targeted enforcement measures. The U.S. government has explicitly made expansion of legal pathways a part of its Collaborative Migration Management Strategy, which focuses on managing migration cooperatively with Mexico and Central America. This aim also features the commitments that the U.S. and other governments in the Americas have made as signatories of the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection and as participants in the North American Leaders’ Summit.

Featured Lecturer:

Dr. Andrew Selee, President, Migration Policy Institute

Andrew Selee is President of MPI. His research focuses on migration globally, with a special emphasis on Latin America and the United States. He is the author and editor of several books, including Vanishing Frontiers: The Forces Driving Mexico and the United States Together (PublicAffairs, 2018), and his articles on migration in the Americas have appeared in the New York Times, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy, among other publications. Dr. Selee teaches at Georgetown University, and he worked previously at the Wilson Center, where he was Director of the Mexico Institute, Vice President for Programs, and Executive Vice President. He also worked on migration and development programs in Tijuana, Mexico, for several years and in the U.S. Congress. He received his PhD in policy studies from the University of Maryland; his MA in Latin American studies from the University of California, San Diego; and his BA from Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. James F. Hollifield is the Ora Nixon Arnold Fellow in International Political Economy, Professor of Political Science, Director of the Tower Center at Southern Methodist University and Acting Director of the Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York and was a Global Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. Dr. Hollifield is a leading scholar of international and comparative political economy, and he has written widely on issues of political and economic development, with a focus on migration. His major books are Immigrants, Markets and States (Harvard UP 1992), L’Immigration et l’Etat Nation (L’Harmattan 1997), Pathways to Democracy (Routledge, 2000), Migration, Trade and Development (Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas 2009), 2000), Herausforderung Migration— Perspektiven der vergleichenden Politikwissenschaft (Lit Verlag 2006). In 2016, Hollifield received a Distinguished Scholar Award from the International Studies Association. In 2021-22 he was named as a Fellow of the French Institute for Advanced Studies in Paris, and in 2023 he received a Career Achievement Award from the American Political Science Association.
